Purpose
We believe that waste is a problem. However, its existence and destination need not be synonymous with difficulties for industries, the environment or society — as long as we do something about it. And through Verdera we are.
We are determined to discover new alternatives for waste management and transform the planet and the realities of everyone who lives on it. We honor this commitment every day and invite you to be a part of this sustainable journey along with us.
Aligned with Votorantim Cimentos’ global sustainability commitments, St Marys Cement is diverting waste from landfills, repurposing industrial byproducts and working to generate circular economies in the areas that surround our operations. Through services offered under the Vedera brand we are lowering the carbon footprint of our operations and the cement industry by repurposing waste materials as low carbon fuels and raw materials in cement manufacturing.
From waste stream to alternative fuels and raw materials
Factors that determine the feasibility of an alternative fuel include the extent to which the material is environmentally beneficial and the implementation of new technologies to monitor performance and emissions. Managing the supply chain is also a consideration, as availability and the potential emissions generated by transporting the materials to the plant must be considered. Through our Verdera programs and services, we partner with companies and like-minded organizations to scientifically qualify the potential repurposing of waste and byproducts as alternative fuels to:
- Provide cleaner thermal energy for the cement manufacturing processes
- Reduce carbon emissions
- Offer environmentally friendly and sustainable end-of-life options for waste and industrial byproducts
Traditional feedstocks used in cement manufacturing comprise naturally occurring materials like limestone, shale or clay, sand, and iron ore. These four materials provide the respective elements of calcium, aluminum, silica and iron, which are necessary for cement manufacturing. But naturally occurring raw materials aren’t the only things we can use. With proper evaluations and regulatory approvals, a cement kiln can legitimately reuse any number of byproducts from other industries in the production of cement, when available in sufficient supply, creating new and more ecological supply chains and environmental solutions.
